Japan Disaster Assistance

PDA Japan
Rescue efforts continue in Japan following the March 11 tsunami and earthquake and the growing nuclear crisis. Thousands have been confirmed dead, tens of thousands are missing, and hundreds of thousands have been evacuated. Central Presbyterian Church and the PC(U.S.A.) is responding through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and our ecumenical and mission partners. Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center is a focal point in the disaster assistance by assembling Hygiene and Baby Kits that are being shipped to Japan. They have asked that we help by donating the items in these kits and sending them to Ferncliff. The list of items needed and a place to donate the items can be found in McElyea Hall. The list can also be found here. Thank you for your assistance in their time of need.
UPDATE: It is asked that you don’t assemble the kits before you deliver the items to the church. The campers at Ferncliff will prepare all the items into kits before delivery to disaster regions.

Souper Bowl of Caring (UPDATED)

SouperBowl
As you are probably aware, next Sunday is the FOOTBALL Super Bowl.  Our church will also have our S-O-U-P-E-R Bowl (of Caring).
The Souper Bowl of Caring is a grassroots, faith-based crusade against hunger. Central’s youth are joining other churches, schools, organizations and individuals across the country to fight hunger and poverty by collecting dollars in soup pots next Sunday.  What is collected stays in the community to help fight hunger, but we report our total to the Souper Bowl of Caring headquarters so that they can come up with a grand total. All of the money we collect will benefit Neighbor to Neighbor. Last year we collected over $200!
Rev. Dr. Brad Smith, the founder of Souper Bowl of Caring, said, “It is a way for young people to put God’s love into action by developing a heart for helping others. The goal is for these young people to see they can make a difference and for them to continue contributing through volunteerism when they reach adulthood.”
In 2010, over 13,000 groups raised over $10 million for soup kitchens, food banks and other helping charities.  Since the Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990, over $60 million has been given to help those in need. The Souper Bowl of Caring most often benefits local food banks and soup kitchens, but world
hunger organizations, denominational missions and other international ministries have also been recipients of Souper Bowl of Caring dollars.
UPDATE: CPC Youth raised $109 for Neighbor to Neighbor! Thank You for your generosity!

End of Life Series Begins

I apologize for the late notice on this but Dr. Dan Festa began his End of Life Series this past Wednesday Night. The series will focus on the challenges of dying in America. It’s not too late to join though! The class is being held each Wednesday Night from 5:30pm to 7pm through October 6th in McElyea Hall. The meetings will begin with a lite supper at a nominal cost, and end well before dark. To sign up or for more information, call the church office. Feel free to invite anyone that you think may benefit from this information. We hope to see you there!

I should note I’ve updated the Worship Schedule page with a church event calendar that you can look at and subscribe to. The End of Life Series was listed there!
